Originally developed in 399 BC by the ancient Greeks at Syracuse, the ballista was in effect a giant crossbow, used for shooting large arrows or darts that were typically used for defense against besieging infantry. For shelter, they were often situated in a wooden shelter or hoarding and their mounting allowed them to be swiveled to bear against advancing troops.
The Ballista uses a pair of tensioned bands, in the center of each is a bow arm and the arms are connected at the ends by the bowstring. The bands retain tension by being restrained by two ratchets each with a locking pawl. The windlass at the back is used to draw the trigger mechanism back, pulling with it the bowstring. When the bowstring is taught, the bolt is placed in the firing channel and the device aimed and fired.

The models are manufactured from renewable wood sources and are design for age 9 and over. Younger builders may require the assistance of an adult. The models, both kits and built, are not suitable for children 3 years and under due to the risk of choking on the small parts.
