The Caterpillar is simply delightful; the wiggly motion of the body driven by the series of offset cams will fascinate young and old alike. It wiggles along, all the while watching the pretty butterfly overhead and dreaming of its’ own metamorphosis.
The Caterpillar is a classic series of offset cams with the pushrods connected directly into the body segments. The cams are offset from one another ideally by thirty six degrees as there are ten in total thus providing the “wiggly” undulations of the body segments. At the opposing end to the crank handle is a friction based transmission that provides the rotary motion for the butterfly arm.
